Transform your staircase
The staircase is a functional element that we use every day without giving it too much "decorative" attention. Well, today is changing! I offer several inspirations to help you give personality to your staircase.Paint the stairs
There is little that a few layers of paint can reinvent. If your staircase is in good condition and the handrail and bars are to your taste, then why not just refresh them with paint? I like the combo of risers and steps of contrasting colors. You can also introduce a pattern on the riser, such as chevrons. To realize this project you will need:
T.S.P.
Sand paper
Masking tape
Foam brushes or bevel brush
Primer
Paint the color of your choice
Matt varnish with water base
Start by cleaning the risers with the powerful degreaser that is T.S.P. Then, sand the surface to be painted to scratch the varnish and thus help the adhesion of the paint. Clean with a damp cloth.
With the ribbon, form the pattern you want. Once ribbon is in place, apply a thin coat of primer. Let dry well.
Apply a first coat of paint of the color of your choice using a foam brush, or a brush, and let it dry well. Apply a second coat of paint.
Tip: Before the paint is completely dry, remove the masking tape. I find that doing this step while the second coat of paint is still slightly damp prevents the tape from removing large pieces of paint that may have sticked to the tape.
Now that the tape has been removed and you have allowed the paint to dry, apply a thin layer of water-based matte varnish to prevent your work from being damaged by the use of the steps.
Double function and storage
The staircase is also an ideal place to add necessary storage at home or where to locate a small office or reading area. These ideas require a little more planning and perhaps help to achieve them, but they are all extremely creative and most importantly useful.
A good idea to add storage to a small vestibule is to add storage boxes under the stairs. Thus, this storage will be easily accessible while being discreet.
Carpet on the stairs
When we think of the upholstery of the stairs, we often think of the wall-to-wall carpeting. Although this option is one to consider, I would like to suggest the alternative of installing a carpet path (called "runner" in English). Available in a multitude of patterns and textures, these carpet paths add a dose of instant personality to the staircase and especially the adjoining rooms with which it can be harmonized.
I really like to dare to design the staircase for two reasons: firstly, because the staircase is an entity in its own right and deserves a healthy dose of texture, and secondly, because a motif like stripes can help give an impression of height and grandeur to the staircase and therefore to the house.
Wallpaper on the stairs
Another way to transform the stairs is with wallpaper. Either on the wall that climbs the steps or installed on each of the risers, the wallpaper settles well (and removes well too) and most importantly, it adds a touch of glamor to the decor.
Tip: When decorating wallpaper risers, be sure to choose a pattern that is not too big to cut at installation. Try as much as possible to arrange your pattern from one step to another so that the overview is cohesive.
